A field of study:History and Theory of Art

Length of study: 3 years (6 semesters)

Characteristic 

The main topics of bachelor´s degree studies in the field of study History and Theory of Art are associated with a study program. These topics are history of art, theories of art, an artwork analysis, methodology of research work, class research projects, and a final Bachelor thesis. This knowledge represents 3/5 of ECTS credits of the study program and the credits can be gained equally in all three years of the bachelor's degree studies. The study is supplemented by compulsory elective subjects and elective subjects. This allows a student to be more specialized and improve hisknowledge of world and Slovak art and architecture as well as cultural history.

Admission Requirements

Terms of admission procedure are suggested by a dean and approved by an Academic Senate of the Faculty of Philosophy, Trnava University. The basic condition for admission to the bachelor's degree studies is to obtain full secondary education or full secondary vocational education.

The Graduate Profile

A graduate - a Bachelor of Arts in History and Theory of Art:

 

      

Gains theoretical knowledge about essential facts, concepts, principles and theories of art from historical and contemporary perspective, becomes familiar with a system of basic procedures and methods of scientific research, becomes familiar with devices for interpreting artworks based on factual analysis and the relevant theoretical system, and learns how to form opinions and critical judgments in his expertise.

      

Is able to use history and theory in research and practice, gains analytical thinking skills, is able to formulate a critical judgment, is able to use knowledge of the processes of creation in a theoretical modeling of artifacts and he is able to determine the originality of the contribution to the scientific system and the knowledge system in formulating the principles of creation.

      

Gainscomplementary knowledge and skills, i.e. to work efficiently and independently but also as a member of a research team, to keep in touch with the latest developments in his discipline and continue his own professional development, to adapt to critical thinking, and to succeed in dialogue with creators of artifacts.

Career Opportunities

The Bachelor of Arts can work in public and private museums and galleries as a lecturer or a technician, or he can be employed in heritage practice. After one graduates from the additional pedagogical education one can also become a teacher in primary and secondary schools.

The bachelor´s degree studies are completed after passing the Bachelor Final Exam and after successful elaboration and defense of a bachelor thesis. The bachelor thesis verifies knowledge and skills which the student gained during the study and his abilities to use them in solving tasks concerning the relevant field of study. The Department of History and Theory of Art is involved in student exchange programs CEEPUS and Socrates - Erazmus.
