Characteristic

The main topics of master´s degree studies  in the field of study History and Theory of Art are  theory of art (methods and techniques), history of art, artwork analysis and its special aspects, criticism and journalism genres, methodology of research work (latest trends), art and media, and a class research project. This knowledge must represent at least 1/2 of ECTS credits of the study program and the credits can be gained equally in both years of the master's degree studies.

Admission Requirements

Terms of an admission procedure are suggested by a dean and approved by the Academic Senate of the Faculty of Philosophy, Trnava University. The basic requirement for admission to the master's degree studies is previous study at the bachelor´s level in the studied area or in related areas.

A graduate - a Master of Arts in History and Theory of Art:

      

Gains theoretical knowledge: is capable of independent creative, analytical and critical thinking on the principle of developed talents, gains insight into multiple forms of contemporary art, is able to reflect art from the perspective of the most modern humanities, gains prerequisites for independent scientific work to carry out more extensive research.

      

Gains practical skills: is able to define relationships between artwork, artistic performance and a percipient, has access to education in intercultural, interdisciplinary and gender context, gains a wide range of creative and practical skills, is capable of creative exploration and discovery of connections, new insights and research procedures, is able to use creative science-research techniques, is original in criticism and evaluation, and follows ethical principles, is capable of international cooperation in an organization and implementation of scientific work and research.

      

Gainscomplementary knowledge and skills: is able to work independently and efficiently as an individual, as a member of a research team or as a team leader, is able to keep in touch with the latest developments in art and science, and is capable of orientation in the wider context of humanities. 

Career Opportunities

The graduate has an opportunity to work in demanding work in: promotion of art in mass media, journalism, art education at the second and third level of the educational system of the Slovak Republic, professional juries and committees, management of institutions of art and culture. The Master of Arts has a good command of two foreign languages and is able to pursue doctoral studies in his own as well as in a related study field.

A part of the master's degree program is a diploma thesis whose defense is a part of the state examinations. The diploma thesis demonstrates students' ability to work independently and acquire theoretical and practical knowledge based on the current state of science (and art). The student is also able to apply and use the knowledge creatively. The Department of History and Theory of Art is involved in student exchange programs CEEPUS and Socrates - Erazmus.
