Sociology (BA, full-time)

Programme Overview

The Bachelor’s degree programme is completed in the standard length of three years (six semesters) in full-time form. It concludes with a final thesis and a state examination.

The Bachelor’s study programme focuses on providing fundamental theoretical and practical knowledge that enables students to understand and actively use core sociological concepts and theories. It also develops practical methodological skills necessary for preparing sociological research projects and interpreting their results.

Graduates of the Bachelor’s programme in Sociology acquire comprehensive knowledge of the core themes of sociology, including general sociology, methods and techniques of sociological research, visual sociology, sociology of politics and culture, contemporary sociological theory, and issues of contemporary society.

The programme covers knowledge related to the basic levels, subsystems, and processes within society and its segments, as well as methodological approaches and methodological principles for examining social reality. It aims to develop knowledge and skills in sociological theory, the history of sociology, and research methods, complemented by foundational knowledge from related disciplines such as demography, statistics, psychology, economics, political science, and methodology of science.

Core topics in sociology include social micro- and macro-structures, social processes, the history of sociological thought, classical and contemporary sociological theories, and methods and techniques of sociological research.

Students of the first-cycle Sociology programme are prepared to master the theoretical and methodological foundations of studying social phenomena, analysing current social problems, and processing results from surveys, interviews, and observations. They are able to apply theoretical knowledge in practical activities within public administration institutions, the private sector (marketing, public opinion research, human resources), and non-profit organisations, particularly in positions focused on working with people and addressing social issues. They develop the ability to collect, process, and interpret data from sociological research and other sources, especially statistical data.

Sociology (MA, full-time)

Programme Overview

The Master’s degree programme is completed in the standard full-time length of two years (four semesters) and concludes with a Master’s thesis and a state examination.

The Master’s study programme focuses on advanced scientific knowledge in sociology and related supporting disciplines, as well as on the professional skills required for the qualified practice of a sociologist. Graduates acquire comprehensive knowledge of sociological theories and research methods. This knowledge is further expanded through specialised sociological subjects such as European trends in social policy, European political cultures, media and the public, family policy, analysis of visual documents, the phenomenon of consumption, the impact of crises on European societies, sociology of fashion, sociology of sport, and data processing using specialised IT software. The programme also integrates knowledge from related academic fields.

Students of the second-cycle Sociology programme are trained to conduct research on social phenomena, analyse current social problems, and collect, process, and interpret data from surveys, interviews, and observations. They are able to apply theoretical knowledge in practice within public administration institutions, the private sector (marketing, public opinion research, human resources), and non-profit organisations, particularly in positions focused on working with people and addressing social issues. They develop strong skills in obtaining, processing, and interpreting data from sociological research.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the Master’s degree in Sociology are prepared to design and participate in research projects, carry out expert tasks, and demonstrate a high level of social communication and critical thinking.

Their knowledge and skills in working with information and data, as well as their theoretical, interpretative, communicative, and analytical competences, qualify them not only to continue in academic and research careers, but also to work in consultancy, expert management, diplomacy, applied sociological disciplines, human resources, public opinion research, marketing and mass media, non-governmental organisations, the business sector, public administration, and in areas of applied and sectoral research such as social policy, social work, and human resource development.
