Life in the borderland
Settlement structures in the fore-field and hinterland of the Pannonian limes from late La Tène period to the Late Antiquity

In the Ancient times, South-West Slovakia had a prominent position on the border between the Roman provinces and Germanic barbaricum. That is why it is often coined as “the third zone” or “a bridge” between the Ancient world and the so-called free Germania. It was a bridge for the exchange of not only tangible goods (artefacts, the so-called Roman imports), but also ideas and new technology. Through case studies, the project aims to clarify and better understand the development of settlement structures in the period from late La Tene until the end of the Ancient times.
In the earlier period, the territory south and north of the Danube was uniform, inhabited by the Celtic population. When the Roman border was established along the Danube (limes Romanus) and after the arrival of Germanic tribes, the originally coherent territory was divided into two different areas. The project will analyse the process how the Romans impacted the Germanic settlements and the acculturation of the Quadic nobility and its life.
