Podobne ako aj minulé semestre, aj tentoraz začíname akademický rok sériou prednášok výnimočného a svetovo významného mysliteľa. Tentokrát naše pozvanie prijal prof. Ernest Sosa.
Prof. Ernest Sosapatrí medzi najvýznamnejších analytických filozofov a epistemológov súčasnosti. Od roku 2007 je v Board of Governors Professor of Philosophy na Rutgers University. Predtým (od roku 1964) pôsobil na Brown University. Vyštudoval filozofiu na univerzitách v Miami (BA, MA) a Pittsburgu (PhD. pod vedením Nicholasa Reschera). Vo svojej vedeckej práci sa venuje epistemológii, metafyzike, novovekej filozofii a filozofii mysle. Je autorom viacerých kníh: Knowledge in Perspective (CUP 1991), Epistemic Justification (BP 2003), A Virtue Epistemology (OUP 2007), Reflective Knowledge (OUP 2009), Knowing Full Well (PUP 2011)... O význame jeho filozofie svedčí aj kniha Ernest Sosa and His Critics, editovaná J. Grecom (Oxford 2004), ktorá obsahuje sériu kritických esejí rôznych významných autorov mapujúcich prácu a vplyv názorov prof. Sosu, podobne ako kniha Virtuous Thoughts. The Philosophy of Ernest Sosa (Springer 2013). editovaná J. Turrim. Prof Sosa je nositeľom viacerých významných ocenení, bývalým prezidentom American Philosophical Association a členom American Academy of Arts & Sciences. Je hlavným editorom filozofických časopisov Noûs a Philosophy and Phenomenological Research. V roku 2005, bol ocenený John Locke Lectures na Oxforde. Taktiež bol ocenený cenou Nicholas Rescher Prize za príspevky k systematickej filozofii udeľovanej obročne University of Pittsburgh a Quinn Prize udeľovanou American Philosophical Association (2010). Ako hosťujúci profesor pôsobil (okrem iného) na CUNY Graduate Center, na Harvarde, na Oxforde, Princetone, na Australian National University, na univerzite v Salamanke, ako aj na mnohých ďalších univerzitách.
Prednášky sú verejné, sú určene študentom i širšej odbornej verejnosti (pre externých záujemcov z kapacitných dôvodov prosíme o rezerváciu miesta cez filozof [at] truni.sk), pre študentov Filozofie a Kognitívnych štúdií (prípadne iných odborov FF) je možnosť ich absolvovať ako súčasť predmetu "On Virtue Epistemology" (prihlásenie cez Mais).

It will be argued that Descartes is a full-fledged virtue epistemologist in every respect.
September 30, 2014 (TUE) 10:20-12:50, 3P1:The Gettier Problem, Experimental Philosophy, and Situationism.
We will take up the problem of what knowledge is, if not justified true belief. This is the problem of Plato's Theaetetus. We will also consider the issue of how knowledge is better than mere true belief (as posed in Plato's Meno), if it is better. In addition, we will consider well-known attacks on virtue theory from experimental (X-Phi) philosophers, and from situationists.

This lecture will develop and defend the virtue epistemology presented in my public lecture entitled "Judgment and Agency" beyond its defense in the question and answer session when it is delivered a day earlier, on Tuesday afternoon.

It has been received wisdom for several decades now that there are two quite different and competing varieties of virtue epistemology. One highlights basic human faculties, such as perception, memory, etc. The other highlights important character traits that enable human beings cooperatively to interact and collaborate epistemically. For this second approach, virtues such as open-mindedness and intellectual courage come to the fore. In this talk, I will offer an assessment of the issues and of the rival views.
