About

ANODOS. Studies of the Ancient World is a peer reviewed scientific conference proceeding with a focus on the history and material culture of the ancient world and its adjacent territories, published by the Department of Classical Archaeology, Faculty of Philosophy and Arts of Trnava University in Trnava. Its aim is to publish foreign language contributions presented at the international scientific conference organised by the department on current topics. The conference takes place every two to three years and provides the latest research results in the field of classical and Roman provincial archaeology in a broad chronological framework from the Bronze Age to late antiquity. The main conference topics so far have been: contacts between Middle Europe and the Mediterranean, jewellery and costume, arms and armour, cult and sanctuary, the phenomenon of cultural borders and border cultures, arts and crafts, and ancient communities and their elites through the ages. Jubilee volumes were dedicated to eminent researchers: Dr. h. c., prof. PhDr. Mária Novotná, DrSc., doc. PhDr. Marie Dufková, CSc. and Prof. Dr. Werner Jobst. Fourteen volumes with 325 contributions have been published since 2001, most of them in English and German with some contributions in French.

Anodos–Supplementum is a foreign language supplement to the conference proceeding, which contains contributions on selected topics from a broader field of classical and Roman provincial archaeology written by scholars of the Department of Classical Archaeology of Trnava University in Trnava, or in cooperation with domestic and foreign researchers, as well as outputs of joint projects. Previous Supplementum topics have been related to the centres and provinces of the ancient world, the problems and perspectives of classical and Roman provincial archaeology, cities and landscapes in antiquity, research methods and techniques in classical archaeology, arms and armour in antiquity, and amber artefacts discovered in the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus in 1987–1994. Six volumes comprising 41 contributions have been published since 2001, most of them in English and German with some contributions in French. From 2021, the opportunity to publish articles in ANODOS–Supplementum is also offered to young researchers who have completed their studies in classical archaeology and related disciplines. Contributions valuable for scientific research may also be submitted in Slovak with a foreign language summary.

The ANODOS. Studies of the Ancient World and Anodos–Supplementum proceedings focus on classical and Roman provincial archaeology, ancient history, art and religion, including epigraphy and numismatics. An interdisciplinary approach is welcome. The publications are designated for both domestic and foreign experts in the field of classical and Roman provincial archaeology as well as interested scholars from other academic disciplines.

Ethical code

Peer review policy

All contributions since 2014 have been peer reviewed by an expert in the field. From 2021, the contributions are reviewed by two experts. The reviews have standardised forms and assess the quality of the submitted papers in terms of their academic value, content and formal characteristics.  Throughout the existence of the proceeding and its supplement, papers by foreign authors have constituted around two thirds of all contributions, representing 15 European and overseas countries (Turkey, Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Italy, Hungary, Poland, Czech Republic, Austria, Germany, France, United Kingdom and USA).

The submitted manuscripts are adjudicated in two steps. First, the editorial board will assess whether the manuscript is complete and meets the formal requirements established in the Guidelines on manuscript files. If the manuscript complies with these criteria, it is sent out for a peer review. When peer review was introduced in 2014, all contributions were reviewed by one independent reviewer, an expert in the field. From 2021, all contributions are reviewed by two reviewers; in the case of vastly different reviews, the manuscript is presented to a third reviewer. The reviews have standardised forms and assess the quality of the submitted papers in terms of their academic value, content and formal characteristics. The reviewer may write his/her comments directly in the manuscript. The reviewer also declares with his signature that he/she has followed the ethical principles of peer review as stated in the Ethical code. From 2014 until 2021 we used open peer review, while from 2021 we use double blind reviews, where the identities of both the reviewer and the author are anonymized. The reviews are provided only to the authors and the editorial board, which uses it for the purpose of making a final decision on publication. The editorial office will inform the author of the outcome of the peer review within three months from submission at the latest. Unsolicited manuscripts will not be returned.

Guidelines on manuscript files

Submission

Authors are to submit the complete manuscript in electronic form, formatted in accordance with the requirements laid down in the Guidelines on manuscript files, to editor-in-chief Klára Kuzmová (klara.kuzmova [at] truni.sk), along with the Author declaration, which is a prerequisite for the acceptance of the manuscript.
